Bryn Mawr

One of several scenic, affluent suburbs west of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr is geographically situated between three townships sharing the same zip code of 19010: Lower Merion, Radnor and Haverford Townships. Bryn Mawr was originally named after an estate near Dolgellau in North Wales owned by Rowland Ellis, who immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686. The unique name means “big hill” in Welsh. With the coming of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the community continued to thrive. Needing new names for the stations and the accompanying land along the Main Line, the Railroad chose to name it after Ellis’ homestead Bryn Mawr. The following decades saw Bryn Mawr grow and prosper into these beautiful historic estates that now grace its most prominent streets.

As a small town with a large university population, Bryn Mawr has a cool, hip vibe of its own. With a vibrant mix of professionals, college students and empty nesters, town life is centered on the prestigious Bryn Mawr College. The college staff, faculty and students contribute to a large part of the town’s local economy. Bryn Mawr also boasts a long list of famous and notable residents including actress Katherine Hepburn, singer Teddy Pendergrass and President Woodrow Wilson.

Over time, Bryn Mawr has become a fabulous place to raise a family. With a substantial network of family-oriented services and community opportunities, the town supports high academic values within a supportive and encouraging environment. It also has an extremely high rate of single-family home ownership; a reflection of the stability and security of the area.

Within the town limits, Brym Mawr is a shopper’s dream. From fine crafts and antiques to the area’s most established artists, regardless of trends, fashion or tastes you’re sure to find something for that special someone. For film buffs, there’s the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. Founded by the region’s business, civic and academic leaders in 2002, its goal was to provide opportunities for an ever-growing diverse community to share ideas through the understanding of fine films and film education.
